Rylie Jobe is an artist living and working in Los Angeles.

She came to abstraction through realist painting, where the interest was never in detail so much as in a kind of photographic softness. Her paintings are made without visible gesture or brushwork, built in layers of acrylic, often finished in poured resin. The surfaces owe more to aluminum, plastic, and polycarbonate than to canvas: hard, cool, and manufactured-looking, though made entirely by hand. The work is meant to sit closer to an object than a picture.

From across a room the work reads as a field. Up close something surfaces, and never fully arrives.

An image on a screen gives itself up in a second and is gone as fast. A painting is slow, physical, and partly withheld, so the only way to get anything from it is to stay with it. What comes back is closer to how memory behaves than how a photograph behaves. Something was recorded, it is still in there, and it cannot quite be retrieved. The surface shifts with light and viewing angle, so it never resolves the same way twice.
